Dear friend,
How are you?
I know
it’s a throw away question.
We get asked “How are you?”
when people greet us.
But we barely hear the words.
We know
the questioner
is simply being polite.
We know
it’s a throw away question
with no actual meaning.
So, we toss back
a throw away reply:
“Fine, thanks. How are you?”
Robot question
gets robot answer.
Person asking
doesn’t want to know.
Person answering
doesn’t want to tell.
This time is different
I actually want to know
how you are.
I hope you will tell me.
I hope you will write
at least a few words
(as many as you like)
in response to this letter.
I hope you will tell me
how you are feeling
these days.
What burning pains
keep you up at night?
What problems
do you wish
you could solve?
Though I can’t respond individually
(I tried to answer every reader
when I first began these letters
but it took me days to do it)
I will ponder and learn from
and care about
every feeling you express.
Your responses
will influence my thinking
and contribute to my writing.
Thank you in advance
if you decide to share.
Hit hard
Every one of us
has been hit hard
by the cascade of painful blows
in recent weeks.
My heart is troubled
knowing that many of you
were already suffering
from the pain of grief
illness
or both
well before
being hit
by our political calamity.
Some of you
are fighting cancer
or other debilitating physical condition.
Others of you
are suffering from depression
or other painful emotional condition.
Some of you are grieving
the death of your spouse
mother, father, child, friend or pet.
Your courage was already
being sorely tested.
And now this.
Shock upon shock.
Loss upon loss.
I am deeply sorry.
What do you need
What do you need
that I might be able to provide,
dear friend?
What can I give you
to comfort and sustain
your soul?
What do you need
from me
that would lift you
more free
of suffering?
My prayer
I always pray
before and during
each letter I write to you.
I pray I can find
the words you need
to hear.
I am grateful
that every week
God gives me
the spirit I ask Him for.
I wish I could
sit with you right now
and talk eye to eye.
I am smiling
just thinking of that!
I left private practice
because there
I could only connect
with a few souls.
I wanted so much
to build the freedom
of many more!
Now here I am.
Right here with you.
Connecting on this page
as my fingers
slowly bring forward
the words of my heart.
Thank you for being here.
You make me deeply happy
that you let me in.
My recent letters
In the lead up to the election
and in these weeks since
I felt it necessary
to shift the focus
of my letters.
To apply my core knowledge
of psychological and spiritual principles
in the political realm.
I have done my best
to offer you insight
on how we can deal
with our crisis.
I have poured out my soul
in these letters.
Each one
took a full week to write.
There is nothing further
I know how to add in this realm.
Fortunately I know
we have many excellent political writers
to follow here on substack.
Among them are several
of my readers.
I salute each one of you.
I read and learn constantly
from all our fine thought leaders.
I know they will
teach and strengthen all of us
throughout this crisis.
From here
From here
I am going to resume writing to you
in the domain I know best.
I will seek to strengthen you
psychologically and spiritually.
Build you up
into your best self
so you can contribute
your unique gifts
to protecting and building
our freedom.
I will feed and tend
your mind and soul
to keep you shining
so you can
be the light.
What has worked best for me is to accept there are things I cannot change. Instead of using up my mental energy trying to change what I cannot I concentrate on navigating the path in front of me.
It's not a performative question all the time, but as you say, the answer too often is. Despite the temporary political mess, I'm well, and somewhat optimistic about our future provided that we learn from what we're seeing that, Yes, it can happen here, but it doesn't have to.
Your thoughtful and caring letters, the equally thoughtful responses, and the new learning I've derived from many of them, are wonderfully restorative and provide a powerful counterpoint to the Trumpian madness and nihilism. This too will pass, too slowly, and with too much pain, but when it does we will be here together and stronger for the experience. Slava Ukraini by all means, and God continue to bless America.
