Spent much of my life eating my stress and depression. We joined a gym last July. It is working. Both Soulmate and I have lost significant amounts of weight AND have a much better outlook. The mind body connection cannot be ignored.
"Tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are" from French gastronome Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's 1826 book The Physiology of Taste. Thought of the idiom "you are what you eat" and was surprised to find it's a shortened form of something written1826. Goes to show ya how long folks have been struggling with food issues.
Good column, Dr. Hall! In my silvery years here, though, I wish there was a maintenance manual to consult from time to time. They never tell you how parts wear out and how many ways they can wear out or stiffen up. Fortunate here, no weight problem, eating healthfully, but due to cranky parts I can't bend over and touch the palms of my hands on the floor anymore. 😐
Indeed the mind is such an important aspect of our wellbeing. A healthy mind can influence how we respond to external circumstances that are bound to happen in life. Thank you Deborah

What you have written is the simple truth!

Love this, Deborah. Very well written ~ good thoughts to ponder.
Recently lost about 9 pounds. Less meat and less alcohol.
I think Julia Childs had it right: "Eat EVERYTHING! But just a little bit."
It's been a good year at our community farm plot. Fresh veggies every night.
I'll always be an omnivore. Variety! Latest enjoyable snack is roasted seaweed.
Balance is the key. Lot's of salads and fruit. Frequently fish, lots of fowl.
But once in a while a nice medium rare NY Strip steak with a lush cabernet. (With a digestive enzyme :)
